Loved by all generations, this tempura restaurant captures the flavour of ingredients at their best

Tempura Karasawa is a ten-minute walk from Hiroo Station on the Tokyo Metro Line, or a short walk from the Nishi-Azabu intersection in Roppongi. Even in places like the busy intersection of Nishiazabu, if you walk down an alley in Tokyo, the neighborhood is peacefully quiet.

Owner Takashi Karasawa learned Japanese cuisine at the prestigious Hotel Okura in Toranomon, Tokyo in 1971. Seconded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hotel Kasumi Kaikan and Shilla Hotel in Seoul, Korea, he faithfully created Japanese cuisine at the restaurant’s tempura counter for 33 years until 2004. In 2005, he opened Tempura Karasawa in a secluded area of Tokyo, aiming to entertain his guests while preparing dishes of outstanding flavour.

Karasawa is region-agostic when it comes to sourcing produce, trusting his long standing produce brokers to select the day’s best ingredients and those best suited to the restaurant’s distinctive style. Shrimp is a specialty, and only cultured tiger prawns are selected. Produce from Kyushu is favoured throughout the menu, with ingredients from Nagasaki, Oita, and Kagoshima, with ingredients said to have a pronounced sweetness and aroma.

As for drinks, the restaurant focuses on champagne and white wine, as well as Japanese sake; an attractive marriage combines tempura with wine or champagne. 12 to 13 varieties of sake are offered, mainly from Akita and Yamagata, hand-selected by Karasawa himself on visits to breweries.

Entering the calm dining room, guests are ushered to one of 13 counter seats, designed to allow the chef to offer tempura at its most delicious moment to diners. The restaurant also accommodates up to 8 at table seatings, ideal for parties with children, with all dinnerware crafted by Karasawa himself.

Tempura Karasawa is popular with a wide range of guests, from families celebrating anniversaries and occasions across several generations, and is also ideal for dates and entertaining. International visitors can be reassured that the restaurant can also respond to any requests at the counter in English. With the best tempura capturing the flavour of ingredients at their best, Tempura Karasawa offers an experience like few others.
