Ogasawara-Hakushaku-Tei is an elegant Spanish-style building set in the tranquil residential area of Kawada-cho, a 10-minute drive from Shinjuku Station.
The residence of Nagayoshi Ogasawara, the 30th head of the Ogasawara clan and the renowned head of the Ogasawara School of Etiquette, was renovated and opened as a restaurant in June 2002. The renovation took three years, including almost two years of preparation before the restaurant opened. Since opening, the revived restaurant has enjoyed wide popularity for its dining experience in an elegant and prestigious setting reminiscent of the State Guesthouse.
Spanish-born chef Gonzalo Alvarez, who trained at the one-star L'Esguard before working as sous chef at the internationally renowned Neichel, took the position of chef at Ogasawara-Hakushaku-Tei in 2009, offering innovative Spanish cuisine featuring Japanese-sourced ingredients.
With an area of 3,300 sqm (35,600 sqft), Ogasawara-Hakushaku-Tei boasts a spectacular garden with a 500-year old olive tree as its centerpiece, surrounded by a variety of colorful flowers. The space also boasts a rooftop garden where herbs, edible flowers, and olives are grown for the restaurant’s menus. Guests are invited to explore seasonal changes through full course meals that reflect the garden’s ever-changing landscapes. Each dish is crafted with seasonal ingredients, mainly Spanish, sourced from carefully selected producers around Japan.
