An innovative restaurant run by a three-star chef to offer exciting nouvelle cuisine

A one-minute walk from Nakameguro Subway Station, cocon is perched on the fourth floor of a building on a street behind Yamate-dori Street. This innovative restaurant is helmed by Chef Masataka Kuriwaki, who trained at Mirazur, a three-star restaurant in France, and Bennelong, a renowned restaurant in Australia, and served as the head chef of AMOUR, a one-star restaurant in Ebisu. He also received the Bronze Egg Award at Japan’s largest cooking competition for young talented chefs in 2017. Then, with proven track records, he opened his own restaurant, cocon, in July 2021.

The restaurant’s name “cocon” means cocoon in French. It is a metaphor for the protection of children and their process of development towards the future. In addition, as represented by its Japanese homonyms, kokin (which means “ancient and modern times”) and kokon tozai (which means “all times and places”), the name represents the chef’s desire to offer fusion cuisine that combines ingredients and influences from different cultures around the world.

The restaurant offers innovative cuisine grounded in French cooking and influenced by the essence of Australian cuisine the chef learned while training in that country. As for ingredients, carefully selected high quality kangaroo meat is imported through a licensed importer, while vegetables, herbs, and seafood are sourced through reliable personal contacts. The chef’s specialties featuring kangaroo meat from Australia and other original dishes, such as “Salad with Kidney Beans” (salad made only of vegetables) and locally produced duck meat dressed with cola-flavored spice sauce excite the taste buds of guests.

The food and wine pairing menu offers a wide selection of wines from France, Australia, California, and Hungary among others. The soft drink menu also has a variety of options, such as organic fruit juices and teas.

The interior is modern and sophisticated with a mix of different materials, furnished with four dining tables and a seven-seat counter. The seating counter is at the same level as the kitchen counter to allow guests to feel as if they were at their friend’s home. The restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy casual meals, celebrate anniversaries, and entertain important guests.

I had dinner last night at Cocon in Kamimeguro, and was so impressed I immediately booked again for my return to Tokyo at the end of March. It‘s a 4th floor urban attic with cool spare lines on one side of the room and a tidy kitchen on the other side of the bench, all with a hot soul and reggae soundtrack. Everything made and served by the chef alone. It’s charming, entirely unpretentious, and quite wonderful. The food deserves big words like bold, inventive, and playful, but basically every dish just tasted bloody good. Modern Japanese food made with French techniques, strong use of local ingredients, and a few Australian influences thrown in. Best dishes were an amazing salad of baked and raw carrot with scallop garum, salmon roe and goat cheese; a flavour packed roasted lamb dish with bbq cucumber; a dish of grilled baby squid and the newest of bamboo shoots, with guacamole, corn chips and lime that should have been a modern fusion disaster but somehow worked perfectly; hirame (white fish) marinated in cherry leaves and served with white asparagus and spring herbs; and a coffee mochi dessert with strawberries and white chocolate cream. However, they were all good. Not a dud amongst them. ¥14,500 for ten courses is an absolute steal. The matched wine and sake was also excellent. I have a feeling I will be raving about this one for a while.
