Tokyo, Azabu
A tasteful hideaway for those in the know
Azabu exudes an air of tranquility and tradition that belies its proximity to the vibrant bustle of nearby Roppongi and Tokyo Tower. Coveted by diplomats and business elites as a distinguished residential area, Azabu is likewise revered among Tokyoites as a refined culinary enclave. Frequented by discerning dining connoisseurs and numerous celebrities who discreetly patronize its prestigious restaurants, an aura of upmarket, sophisticated elegance pervades in Azabu.
A cultured urban oasis
While wider Minato-ku, the special ward of Tokyo in which Azabu is located, is renowned for its international flair and cosmopolitanism, Azabu exudes a deeper sense of tradition and old-world charm. The majority of Azabu’s esteemed restaurants are clustered in Nishi-Azabu and Azabu-Juban; the former being a magnet for celebrities and culinary connoisseurs, while the latter offers a diverse array of dining experiences, from establishments that evoke the ambiance of traditional Japanese eateries to acclaimed fine-dining restaurants at the forefront of culinary innovation. This gastronomic diversity underscores the district’s eclectic landscape, with the leafy, serene avenues of Azabu offering welcome respite from the frenetic pace of city life. Strolling through Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park also provides an idyllic retreat amidst the bustling urban surroundings, while within the park, the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library houses an extensive collection of literature from around the world.
Tradition and celebration in the heart of Tokyo
A key festive occasion for the district is the Azabu Noryo Festival, held annually on the last weekend of August, where crowds of revelers enjoy traditional Japanese performances, tantalizing food stalls and a chance to don vibrant yukata (summer kimono) attire. Azabu’s central location means the area enjoys excellent connectivity. Gather at Azabu-Juban station and visitors will be right on the doorstep of the area. Azabu is also highly accessible by foot from several nearby landmarks, with a leisurely stroll southeast from nearby Roppongi leading directly into Azabu, while the walk from Tokyo Tower along Sakurada-dori then onto Iikura-Katamachi Avenue offers a scenic route to the heart of the district.
