Kyoto, Higashiyama
Step into the Kyoto’s historic heart

Higashiyama, a district steeped in historical splendor and cultural richness, lies gracefully on the lower slopes of the eastern
mountains of Kyoto city. This enchanting area stands as one of the
city’s most impeccably preserved historic quarters, offering an
immersive journey into traditional Kyoto and bringing old-world
charm right into the present.

Wandering through history

Higashiyama is home to numerous world-renowned and iconic locations such as the mesmerizing Kiyomizu-dera, the impeccably-presented gardens of Kodaiji temple, and the grandeur of Yasaka shrine in the traditional entertainment district of Gion. The name of the area itself, however, is arguably most closely associated with the routes between them, namely the famous stone pathways of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. Here, the narrow alleyways, wooden buildings, and traditional merchant shops evoke the essence of the ancient capital. While the stroll between Kiyomizu-dera in the south to Yasaka shrine in the north spans less than two kilometers, the picturesque streets of Higashiyama, saturated with nostalgia and adorned with quaint shops, cozy cafes, and inviting restaurants, beckons visitors to linger.

Dining beyond the guidebook

Venturing away from the storied pathways to the northern reaches of Higashiyama, discerning gastronomes will discover a cluster of exquisite dining establishments around Higashiyama station. This somewhat untrodden area, frequented more by locals and those in the know, offers hidden culinary gems with intimate settings, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling crowds of popular hotspots nearby. Those exploring the gastronomic scene here will be pleasantly surprised by the international nature of the cuisine in a region deeply rooted in history and traditional culture. While splendid Washoku restaurants offering authentic Japanese cuisine remain a mainstay, visitors will also encounter several French haute cuisine establishments, which, while staying true to their own culinary roots, often incorporate Kyoto's tradition of seasonal ingredients and menus with their own creative interpretations. Travelers can easily reach Higashiyama station by rail from Kyoto Station, taking the Karasuma line and transferring onto the Tozai line at Karasuma Oike station, while the Kyoto City Bus service offers routes to several key stops within the wider area. Once in Higashiyama, visitors can navigate the district on foot, allowing for spontaneous discoveries and unhurried exploration.
