Savoring tranquility
Kodaiji, renowned for its pristine Zen garden and elegant temple, is a sanctuary of idyllic peace. This area, however, is not only a feast for the soul but also for the palate. Kaiseki, the epitome of Japanese haute cuisine, is presented here with an artistry that rivals the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Additionally, set amidst the picturesque gardens are Kodaiji’s tea houses, which offer visitors the chance to savor traditional matcha green tea and artisanal wagashi sweets.
A world-heritage feast
Somewhat in contrast to the quietude of Kodaiji is Kiyomizu, where the bustling streets leading to its iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple are alive with the vibrant energy of visitors and the enticing aromas of traditional street foods. One can sample delicious taiyaki, fish-shaped cakes filled with red bean paste, to the delicate texture of yatsuhashi, a veritably “Kyoto” confection with an array of flavor options. These street foods provide a delightful contrast to the more formal dining experiences available in the area, which range from historic ryotei serving traditional multi-course meals, to contemporary restaurants that reinterpret classic flavors with modern flair. Both Kodaiji and Kiyomizu are primarily reachable by bus, with routes to both areas running from Kyoto station. Having arrived, navigating between the two areas is a delightful pedestrian experience, with a leisurely 15-minute walk connecting these two historical sites along scenic pathways.
