A hideaway Italian restaurant that sparkles with talent and the gifts of Miyazaki produce

"GIGLI" is like a hideaway spot, located one street in from the downtown area of Chuo Dori Street in Miyazaki, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu. The young owner-chef who trained in Tokyo fascinates his customers with authentic Italian cuisine.

Chef Shin Toyama is a graduate of the Cooking Department, Nisshou Gakuen Senior High School, Miyazaki. After graduating, he went on to Darie in Ginza, "Don Sabatini" in Haneda, and "Il Ghiottone Marunouchi", where he trained under owner-chef Yasuhiro Sasajima for four years. Then, in 2011, he opened GIGLI in his hometown of Miyazaki. In 2015, he was awarded the Bronze Egg in RED U-35, Japan’s top culinary competition to discover the young talented chefs of tomorrow. Chef Toyama’s cooking is bursting with originality. His dishes are created with the following idea in mind: “If Miyazaki were in Italy, what kind of food would I be serving?”

Chef Toyama is particular about having a selection of the best meats that are the pride of Miyazaki. For beef, he uses Black Wagyu from Miyazaki and Toman-gyu, which is known as a “phantom Black Wagyu.” For pork, he uses Nobeoka Yotton pork and Miyakonojo Okome pork; for chicken Kuroiwa Tsuchidori chicken, and so on. Popular "GIGLI" dishes are the quick smoked Miyazaki Black Wagyu, the Black Wagyu cheek simmered in red wine, and from fall through winter, deer and wild boar from Morotsuka Village served together with seasonal fruits. Also, the simple tomato sauce spaghetti created in a straightforward way using Miyazaki Momotaro tomatoes together with Italian whole tomatoes is one of the restaurant’s pasta dishes that continues to be loved by customers. With a focus on Italian and Japanese vintages, GIGLI’s wine list has about 100 wine to go with the food. Just let the staff know what your tastes are and they will arrange a pairing for your enjoyment.

Open the restaurant’s warm, order-made wooden door to find two different types of dining areas. One is a dining area for casual enjoyment, with counter seating for four and elegantly hand-carved tables/chairs in the table-seating area. The other is a subdued, quiet space. The tables are covered in tablecloths and are recommended for special occasions such as dates, anniversaries, or business entertainment. Customers in search of Italian cuisine produced with new values include those coming from other parts of Japan and overseas, in addition to local people. We invite you to enjoy exquisite Italian cuisine born from the talents of this young chef and the gifts of Miyazaki produce.
