A one-minute walk from Nakameguro Subway Station, cocon is perched on the fourth floor of a building on a street behind Yamate-dori Street. This innovative restaurant is helmed by Chef Masataka Kuriwaki, who trained at Mirazur, a three-star restaurant in France, and Bennelong, a renowned restaurant in Australia, and served as the head chef of AMOUR, a one-star restaurant in Ebisu. He also received the Bronze Egg Award at Japan’s largest cooking competition for young talented chefs in 2017. Then, with proven track records, he opened his own restaurant, cocon, in July 2021.
The restaurant’s name “cocon” means cocoon in French. It is a metaphor for the protection of children and their process of development towards the future. In addition, as represented by its Japanese homonyms, kokin (which means “ancient and modern times”) and kokon tozai (which means “all times and places”), the name represents the chef’s desire to offer fusion cuisine that combines ingredients and influences from different cultures around the world.
The restaurant offers innovative cuisine grounded in French cooking and influenced by the essence of Australian cuisine the chef learned while training in that country. As for ingredients, carefully selected high quality kangaroo meat is imported through a licensed importer, while vegetables, herbs, and seafood are sourced through reliable personal contacts. The chef’s specialties featuring kangaroo meat from Australia and other original dishes, such as “Salad with Kidney Beans” (salad made only of vegetables) and locally produced duck meat dressed with cola-flavored spice sauce excite the taste buds of guests.
The food and wine pairing menu offers a wide selection of wines from France, Australia, California, and Hungary among others. The soft drink menu also has a variety of options, such as organic fruit juices and teas.
The interior is modern and sophisticated with a mix of different materials, furnished with four dining tables and a seven-seat counter. The seating counter is at the same level as the kitchen counter to allow guests to feel as if they were at their friend’s home. The restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy casual meals, celebrate anniversaries, and entertain important guests.
